Cargill Case: Single registration center standardizes more than 200,000 items throughout Latin America

With over 150 years of global operations, Cargill is a leading provider of products and services in the food, agricultural, financial, and industrial sectors. Present in 70 countries and with over 150,000 employees, the company works hand in hand with producers, customers, governments, and communities to help people thrive responsibly and sustainably.

In agriculture, Cargill purchases, processes, and distributes grains and other commodities to food and animal feed manufacturers. In the food industry, it supplies high-quality ingredients, meats, and solutions that promote health. In the financial sector, it offers risk management solutions. And in industry, it operates with energy, salt, and steel products, as well as sustainable solutions based on agricultural raw materials.

The scope of the project

Faced with the need to enable more efficient Strategic Sourcing initiatives with data governance, Cargill initiated a robust project to implement a single registration center that would serve different countries and multiple ERPs, such as SAP, JDE, and Maximo.

Currently, the following countries are actively participating in this framework: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Mexico, and Venezuela. Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Guatemala have standardized databases integrated into the model.

The volume is impressive: there are over 205,000 active items shared among all Latin American units, with descriptions in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Each month, between 1,800 and 3,500 new registrations are requested, depending on regional demand.

One of the highlights of the project is the inclusion of chemical items, with personalized registration based on the technical sheets used for purchasing and control processes.

To support applicants and ensure database governance, Cargill established an internal point of contact, coordinated by Hernan, who answers questions, validates requests in accordance with company policy, and moderates technical and administrative aspects to ensure data quality and integrity.

Each new country or business unit joining the Central can process its legacy database, which is standardized by CH Master Data | Astrein, using the same criteria as the active database. This ensures uniqueness and avoids duplication, maintaining global consistency without sacrificing local legal and tax specificities.

CH Master Data | Astrein also has native Spanish-speaking professionals, ensuring correct understanding during service and the creation of new records, which is essential for a project that crosses borders and cultures.
